Sponsoring family to Canada

Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the department that deals with immigration and permanent residency has made several favorable provisions for permanent residents and citizens to sponsor their families to live together in Canada. Families of those living on immigrant visas have to apply for visas themselves separately and the process is no different from that for the first member of the family.

There are two approaches to sponsoring your family according to the CIC. One of them is for sponsoring immediate family, especially spouse and children and the other is to sponsor relatives. In one scenario, spouse, common-law or conjugal partner and dependent children are eligible to come to Canada and become permanent residents. This is irrespective of whether they stay in Canada or in another country. There are a few minimum requirements that must be met by both you and the family member that is being sponsored. All applicants must provide documentation certifying their health and must undergo criminal and background screenings and tests as well. If a family member has been convicted of a felony or has a criminal record, he or she will not be allowed to come to Canada. In addition, those who fall under the vague category of “posing a threat to Canada”; for example, political victims, etc. are also barred from entering Canada. A certificate from the police in the home country is usually needed to prove that there is no criminal record. CIC is very liberal and understanding when it comes to sponsoring family for living in Canada. You will have to apply as a Sponsor for your family’s immigration to Canada. All the required documents need to be furnished along with the application.

Apart from the immediate family, relatives who fall under Family Class as stated by the CIC are eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada with the help of a sponsor. The process for sponsoring a relative is quite similar to that of sponsoring an immediate family member to come to Canada. Medical records need to be submitted and those having a criminal record will not be allowed to come to Canada. In addition, there are a few other requirements and criteria that need to be met before a relative can be deemed a PR card holder of Canada.

As a sponsor, it is your responsibility to show that you can financially support the relative when he or she arrives in Canada. In case you can’t, you will not be eligible to sponsor and the family member might be deported. In addition, you should not have defaulted on any court ordered payments such as alimony or child support. Moreover, you should not have accepted financial assistance from the government and should have a clean criminal record.

Sponsoring family and relatives to Canada is a simple process and the requirements are not stringent at all. There is no interview needed for your family to come to Canada and the process is designed to help citizens, permanent residents and their families.
